BOWEL IMAGING (VIRTUAL COLONOSCOPY)

Colon scanning may be useful in those over 40 or in those with a family history of bowel cancer. Colon cancer is the second commonest cancer in the United Kingdom and may be completely curable if discovered early enough. Most colon cancers develop from polyps which grow from the lining of the bowel. Traditionally examination of the lining of the bowel involved passing a flexible teloscope from the anus up through the bowel.

ADVANTAGES OF BOWEL IMAGING (VIRTUAL COLONOSCOPY)

Virtual colonoscopy allows for visualisation of the bowel without the need to pass a teloscope up through it and so is more comfortable and is not associated with a risk of perforating the bowel, as conventional colonoscopy is.

Moreover it allows for visualisation of the inside and the outside of the bowel and moreover, you can return to your usual activities straight away.
